Mixed-mode Bytecode Execution

چکیده

Modern high-performance virtual machines use dynamic compilation. There is a tension between compilation speed and code quality. We argue that a highly-optimizing compiler is best deployed with both a fast, less-optimizing compiler and an interpreter. We present measurements showing that such a system can achieve the same peak performance as a system with just the optimizing compiler, and startup costs similar to a system with just the interpreter and fast compiler. email address: [email protected] [email protected] © 2000 Sun Microsystems, Inc. Mixed mode execution with context threading

Interpreters are widely used to implement portable language runtime environments. Programs written in these languages may benefit from performance beyond that obtainable by optimizing interpretation alone. A modern high-performance mixed-mode virtual machine (VM) includes a method-based Just In Time (JIT) compiler. A method-based JIT, however, requires the up-front development of a complex comp...

An Embedded Systems Programming Environment for C

Resource constraints are a major concern with the design, development, and deployment of embedded systems. Embedded systems are highly hardware-dependent and have little computational power. Mobile embedded systems are further constrained by their limited battery capacity. Many of these systems are still programmed in assembly language because there is a lack of efficient programming environmen...

TurboJ, a Java Bytecode-to-Native Compiler

TurboJ is an oo-line Java compiler, translating Java byte-codes to native code. TurboJ operates in conjunction with a Java Virtual Machine (JVM); among the supported JVMs are those on HPUX, Linux, and Wind River's Tornado for Java (running under VxWorks). Interfacing with a standard JVM entails beneets not enjoyed by the alternate \standalone" approach; particularly important for embedded syste...

Platform Independent Timing of Java Virtual Machine Bytecode Instructions

The accurate measurement of the execution time of Java bytecode is one factor that is important in order to estimate the total execution time of a Java application running on a Java Virtual Machine. In this paper we document the difficulties and solutions for the accurate timing of Java bytecode. We also identify trends across the execution times recorded for all imperative Java bytecodes. Thes...

Modelling a JVM for polymorphic bytecode

In standard compilation of Java-like languages, the bytecode generated for a given source depends on both the source itself and the compilation environment. This latter dependency poses some unnecessary restrictions on which execution environments can be used to run the code. When using polymorphic bytecode, a binary depends only on its source and can be dynamically adapted to run on diverse en...
